AWARDS FOR ADULT LEARNERS MADE BY YOUNG LEARNERS
This was an extraordinary project, culminating in a very special afternoon
at the Roosevelt Hotel in the heart of New York City. Special awards,
created in an Erik Wood workshop by a class of 8th graders, working
collaboratively at School of the Future in Manhattan, were presented to
six recipients in recognition of their “Exemplary Commitment to Lifelong
Learning” at a ceremony and luncheon at the “Impact & Innovation in
Workforce Development Annual Conference” hosted by the Association of
Joint Labor/Management Educational Programs. “Awards for Adult Learners
made by Young Learners,” said Marshall Goldberg, the Association’s Director.
At his generous invitation, the entire class attended.
The honorees were from the telecommunications, steel, and healthcare industries,
and state level public employment sector; each art/award was custom-made to
relate to the individual who was to receive it. The ceremony was preceded by
comments from AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, and began with an
inspirational video of the students creating the art/awards. It concluded with
two of the students sharing thoughts about the experience of participating in
this project, followed by thunderous applause! |
